Our Projects

Our Projects

Since 2012, the German Lao Association for Development (GLAD) has been dedicated to creating lasting improvements in the rural areas of Laos from our base in Vientiane. Thanks to our committed local team and international partners, we have successfully implemented 10 long-term projects and about 140 small-scale initiatives nationwide, as highlighted on the map. In 2018, we expanded our reach by opening a second office in Southern Laos. Join us in our mission to flourish at the grassroots.

Empowering Education

Our Dual-Focused Approach: Our educational initiatives are designed to create lasting impact in two key areas:

Vocational Training for Young Entrepreneurs:

We provide comprehensive vocational training programs to equip young individuals with practical skills in various trades, including carpentry, mechanics, tailoring, hairdressing, and electrical work. This empowers them to become successful entrepreneurs and contribute to their communities.

Early Childhood Development:

We support early childhood education by training teachers in child-centered teaching methods. Our efforts include:

Strengthening school management to ensure a quality-learning environment.

Providing healthy nutrition (lunch programme) for children during school days to support their overall well-being.

Focusing on children’s needs by engaging in activities like toy making and game training, fostering a holistic and nurturing educational experience.

GLAD focuses on promoting a sustainable future through education!

Supporting Local Agriculture

Our agricultural initiatives aim to empower diverse forms of farming in the community. We focus on two main areas:

Promoting Small-Scale Mixed Farming for Child Nutrition:

As part of our child nutrition (lunch) programs, we support families in creating small-scale mixed farms and home gardens. These gardens allow families to grow a variety of crops, ensuring a steady supply of nutritious meals for their children. By empowering families to manage sustainable farms, we help promote healthy eating habits and long-term food security for the community.

Empowering Youth through Animal Farming:

We provide training programs for young people interested in animal farming, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge. Upon completing the training, these aspiring entrepreneurs receive start-up support in the form of chicks, kids (young goats), and fingerlings, enabling them to start their sustainable animal farming ventures and contribute to local economic growth.

GLAD supports productive and resilient agriculture in rural Laos!

Empowering Women for Sustainable Development

Women empowerment is key to fostering sustainable development and improving community well-being. Our recent projects on women empowerment aim to equip women with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive economically and socially.

Through our community participatory approach, we work directly with local women, providing them with practical training and resources, that build their confidence, foster self-reliance, and create pathways to sustainable livelihoods. Our Key Focus Areas include:

Child Nutrition:

We provide training on child nutrition and healthy meal preparation for women to ensure that children in their communities grow up healthy and strong. By equipping mothers and caregivers with essential knowledge about balanced diets, we help combat malnutrition and support the overall well-being of families.

Sustainable Agriculture:

We train women in sustainable agricultural practices, including crop management, mixed farming techniques, and small-scale animal husbandry. These skills enhance food security for their families and open up economic opportunities by selling surplus produce.

Financial Management:

We empower women with basic financial literacy and management skills, enabling them to manage their household finances more effectively, start small businesses, and contribute to their communities’ economic development. This training covers basic budgeting, savings, profit-making, and investment options.

GLAD supports the agenda for equitable opportunities in rural communities in Laos!

Building Resilient Communities

Many rural areas in Laos still lack the essential infrastructure needed for a healthy, thriving community. Our operations and activities aim to bridge this gap by laying a strong foundation for the provision of everyday needs and amenities. We focus on:

Education

Constructing and renovating primary schools, toilet facilities, kindergartens, and dormitories to foster learning and growth.

Water and Irrigation

Developing vital water and irrigation systems to ensure reliable access to clean water.

Community Facilities:

Establishing a Community Learning Center, community markets and health centers, suspension bridges, and sub-road rehabilitation to support local economies and promote wellness.
