The Integrated Village Development project focused on empowering rural communities in Sekong, the poorest province in Laos, by enhancing livelihoods, building essential infrastructure, and providing financial training. Targeting 35 villages across three districts, the project initially aimed to support 125 families. However, driven by strong interest of village dwellers in income-generating activities, the project expanded to support 138 families, including 13 in Dakchung district cultivating Sacha Inchi, a high-value crop.
The project also provided financial training to village committees across all 35 target villages to enhance fund and loan management. This was further enhanced through the development and distribution of a bookkeeping and loan repayment guide to all village committees. Bank accounts were set up for villages that had easy access to financial institution, while remote communities managed their savings through village committees. Through our initiatives, families have successfully launched small businesses in goat and pig farming, Sacha Inchi cultivation, and pepper farming. By the end of the project, 47 families had already started selling their produce, creating vital income streams and contributing to local economic development.
In addition to economic empowerment, the project has successfully implemented 14 small infrastructure activities across the target districts, including the construction of 2 suspension bridges, 7 small irrigation systems, 1 sub-road rehabilitation, and 4 Community Learning Centers (CLCs).
This holistic approach to development, in collaboration with the Governor’s Office and the Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office (PAFO), was made possible through the generous support of Weltfriedensdienst e.V. (WFD). Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities in Sekong Province.
